U nfortunately, there is no miracle potion to relieve the problem of excessive credit card debt. Each consumer must figure out a method of being able to make his payments and move along with his life. Luckily, there are methods of working through credit card settlement, and it is quite a bit safer and faster than most people comprehend.

Data indicate that a majority of consumers possess multiple credit cards, regardless of their capacity to actually pay for any debt incurred by their use. Unfortunately, when money is scarce, there is a great temptation to use one’s credit cards to purchase food and other necessities. In such instances, the debt grows and eventually becomes overpowering. Although a declaration of bankruptcy is a relatively simple procedure, no one really wishes to take this route and the lenders obviously do not want their customers to do so.

So, this is exactly the cause of the present popularity of credit card settlement. The consumer is able to take advantage of a method to pay off his debt at a reduced principle amount and those providing the lending receive at least some of their money back, rather than losing it all due to their customer’s declaration of bankruptcy. The debt of each consumer is an extremely personal situation to address, but in fact, bankruptcy has a negative impact on the financial condition of all concerned. The lending institutions incur large losses when their customers declare bankruptcy and thus, they prefer to accept a lesser amount in a settlement agreement in order to minimize their losses.

The present political administration created a stimulus program which is misunderstood by many American citizens. Otherwise known as the bailout, funds were provided to the large financial institutions instead of given directly to consumers. Consumers, who are taxpayers and therefore the source of the money, took exception to this program, but in reality it was an effort to assist lenders in recovering from bankruptcy losses. As part of the bailout package, there were incentives to entice the financial institutions to cooperate with consumers in a search for alternatives.

The settlement of credit card debt is currently considered a viable alternative to bankruptcy. One manner of approaching this is to enlist the services of a debt resolution firm. Basically, the debt resolution company will take the role of the point of contact for the consumer’s creditors and will negotiate a reduction of the principal owed and then will operate via an insured bank account to see that the payments are made. The use of a professional negotiator in these situations has resulted in excellent results in reducing a consumer’s amount owed, and it has a tendency to give peace of mind to those involved.

Now, this kind of credit card settlement will have an effect upon your credit rating, but it only lasts for the duration of the repayment term. At the point that the consumer’s debt has been repaid, he may start to rebuild his credit rating, a situation that is not available to someone who has declared bankruptcy. The majority of credit card settlements are completely satisfied within 12 to 36 months, and that is a much shorter term than the ten years that it takes for a reported bankruptcy to drop off one’s credit report.
