UNITED STATES, Oct 12 — I was going through the line up of actors who are scheduled to arrive at the Rock and Shock Festival in Worcester, MA. I noticed a picture of one of the actors which was taken from a movie that I’ve never seen. She was lying down on grass and reaching up and looked as if she was half skeleton and half zombie. With its depth of story and the remarkable talent attached, The Walking Dead gives us an opportunity to raise the bar significantly within this popular genre, and continue our commitment to being the home of premium programming on basic cable

was going through the line up of actors who are scheduled to arrive at the Rock and Shock Festival in Worcester, MA. I noticed a picture of one of the actors which was taken from a movie that I’ve never seen. She was lying down on grass and reaching up and looked as if she was half skeleton and half zombie. The makeup was amazing, so I quickly became curious about what movie this was so I did a little research and was amazed at what I found.
The actress is Melissa Cowan and her picture was not taken from a movie scene at all but from the new upcoming television series on AMC. I always knew that AMC had a decent selection of movies, but never would have guessed that it would take on a horror series including zombies and violence. I watched the preview before I knew that it was going to be a TV series and was sold. I was ready to go the movies and pay to watch it. I was excited to learn that this will not just be your average two-hour horror movie but a series that I can look forward to watching every week.
If this show is half as good as the trailers portray it to be, AMC will have many happy customers on their hands and might even give SyFy producers a run for their money. The show is called The Walking Dead. It comes to us from Frank Darabont and Gale Anne Hurd, or better yet, the producers of The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Terminator, Aliens, Armageddon and The Incredible Hulk. Not too shabby. There will be an assortment of directors as there are for many TV series but the directors working on the first six episodes are Darabont, Michelle MacLaren (X-Files), Gwyneth Horder-Payton (Battlestar Gallactica), Jonathan Ranck (Breaking Bad), Ernest Dickerson (Dexter), Guy Ferland (Sons of Anarchy). I would say that this is a great start!
The show is about, you guessed it, zombies! A man is shot by police and sent to the hospital only to wake up to the remains of an apocalypse. We’ve seen this type of thing before in the movies and for some reason; it never gets old, at least not to me. Nothing beats the quiet city streets and abandoned buildings filled with dead bodies and nothing but quiet. This is the biggest fear that anyone could ever have. Waking up injured and alone with your entire family gone and nothing left. You think you’re alone until you notice a few people roaming the streets and get that little glimmer of hope that perhaps life can go on. That is until you realize that the people walking down the street have a strange posture and as they get closer they look less and less normal. You suddenly realize you are in a new world run by zombies who seek to feed on any and every living thing that is left of the world to ensure their own survival. Not a pretty picture and nothing beats watching this madness from the comfort of your own living room.
The Walking Dead focuses on a small group of citizens who made it through the apocalypse and their struggles to stay alive and thrive in an empty world where danger lurks around every corner. Much like a decent zombie movie, it touches on the lives of the main characters and the hardships they must endure along the way including trying to remain on good terms with the few living people that are left in their world. It seems that the series will include horror, drama and enough action and mystery to keep a wide range of viewers begging for more.
The TV series is based on the comic book series of the same title written by Robert Kirkman who will also be involved with some of the writing for the show. As with the comic book series, the zombies are more of an accent to what is happening in the lives of the survivors. The show focuses more in the dramatic situations each character encounters as well as what is happening inside their minds during this traumatic time. Kirkman’s graphic novels began in 2003 and were printed in black and white. There were 77 novels collectively.
Here is what Charline Collier, the president of AMC has to say about the future hit TV series The Walking Dead, "AMC strives to make original shows that play like movies and The Walking Dead is a perfect complement to the network’s celebrated movie franchise, Fearfest, which has always been an important destination for our audience. With its depth of story and the remarkable talent attached, The Walking Dead gives us an opportunity to raise the bar significantly within this popular genre, and continue our commitment to being the home of premium programming on basic cable." Of course, you would not want to watch The Walking Dead on basic cable, especially if you’re a huge horror fan like me. Dish Network has AMC available in high-definition allowing all of the special effects to come to life in your living room!
