Entertainment, education, advertising, marketing, presentations, games, movies, online services all of them are relying so heavily on multimedia that it has become a separate, huge and highly lucrative field of career.
The foundation of Multimedia, owever is laid on drawing and Design.
Let us have a look on the fundamentals involved in drawing and design. Shape and Forms Various shapes and forms can be selected, resized, and moved and edited. A shape exhibits various properties like line weight, fill color, and fill style etc. Some common shapes are line, rectangle, ellipse, circle, square, rounded rectangle etc.
Line
A line includes length and width but no depth. A line does not have “fill color”. Line is used to create simple shapes, outlines, grids and other such simple shapes. Horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines give various effect and moods to the drawing.
Space and distance
Importance of space in drawing is like that of pause in the speech. A good artist must have a sense of space and distance. Using space judiciously, various effects can be added to the drawing. 3D illusion is created by making clever use of space. Making objects seem far and near space is used. For instance, drawing 2 vertical lines tapering towards each other at the farther end gives an illusion of two parallel railway lines. Distance among objects along with their shapes also gives an illusion of how far an object is from others.
Texture
Texture refers to the look and feel of any surface. The texture of an image shows how light reflects off any surface. For example, to create embossed texture effect any dark color in background and light color in foreground can be taken as shown here.
Color
Color has following 3 properties: Hue Saturation Brightness Hue is the color reflected from or transmitted through an object. In common use, hue is identified by the name of the color such as red, orange, or green. Saturation is the purity of the color. Saturation represents the amount of gray in proportion to the hue, measured as a percentage from 0% (gray) to 100% (fully saturated).
Brightness is the relative lightness or darkness of the color, usually measured as a percentage from 0% (black) to 100% (white).
Perspective
Various shades of colors in relative contrasts can be used to add perspective to the image. Farther objects do not seem as distinct and clear as nearer objects do. A drawing and image can be made to seem deeper by using color contrasts. Such a perspective is used in detailing the images like sceneries etc.
Linear perspective includes lines converging at one point like railway lines, railings of a bridge, long gallery, walls of the room etc.
Typography
Adding text to image enhances the message conveyed by the image. Banners, posters, newsletters, web pages etc. include text in various font faces, colors, styles and effects. All these properties of typeface should be used judiciously and in balance to make the image more effective.
Layout and Balance
It is the scheme or plan to place the objects on the background. A balanced layout includes equal distribution of objects in the image in accord with the available space. Objects are placed on the image depending on their relative sizes so that the visual effect of the image enhances. Unbalanced layout makes objects look like scattered instead of placed in harmony.
Rhythm and Movement
The way a image is displayed in its totality is called its rhythm. How the viewer is going through the various parts of an image is rhythm and movement. Images seem dynamic or static depending on the objects drawn in a particular way. Repetition of objects in various sizes gives the feel of movement like mountain range in scenery. Similarly, you can experience abrupt or sudden movement in the pictures or images showing different objects which visually do not relate together like a scene of a crowded market place.
Shade Shading is one of the most effective way to enhances parts of your image in relation to others. Shading is commonly used to produces shadow and 3D effects. Circular 2D objects seem 3D when one part of the objects surface is shaded in varying intensity like planets in the solar system. Shading on one part produces effects of light on the opposite part of the object. Various shades of gray can be used to apply shading.
