INDONESIA, Nov 04 — You’re getting ready to get married; congratulations. I think. These days, marriages average less than 4 years, and after spending so much time and energy building up to the wedding day, it seems a shame that couples don’t even stay together long enough to pay for the wedding.

ou’re getting ready to get married; congratulations. I think. These days, marriages average less than 4 years, and after spending so much time and energy building up to the wedding day, it seems a shame that couples don’t even stay together long enough to pay for the wedding. There are some things couples can do to make sure they’re going to have a happy marriage.
The reality is that these same things are what the criteria for getting married should be in the first place. If couples can’t do these things before they get married, they should call it off. Let’s take a look at these three things:
1. Communication - this is the overwhelming most important thing that couples need to be able to do. There shouldn’t be any secrets; at least any secrets that could impact the marriage later on. No one should ever ask a question they’re not ready to hear the answer for. So, don’t ever ask your spouse how many men or women they might have been with before you; it serves no purpose. But knowing they were married previously is something that should be discussed. Otherwise, couples should be able to talk to each other. If they can’t, this is a big red flag because it won’t improve once you’re married.
2. Trust - this thing called jealousy is ridiculous because the emotions is brings up are nothing but negative, and at least sometimes unfounded. If you know your potential spouse is cheating on you before you get married, you can bet the same behavior will continue after you’re married. If you’re the type who doesn’t ever want your spouse to talk to a member of the opposite sex, you’re not mature enough to get married because it’s going to happen. If this is something you worry about on a constant basis, it’s a major warning sign that this isn’t the one for you.
3. Money - money is one of the major reasons couples don’t sustain themselves over time. It’s the biggest reason couples fight, and never because there’s too much money. Marrying someone because they have earnings potential isn’t one of the smartest relationship moves unless you see some specific work habits before you get married. Also, realize that the good times won’t always be the great times.
