How to determine oxygen sensor failure symptoms

Oxygen sensors play an integral role in your vehicle’s exhaust system. The function of the o2 sensor is to test the air in your exhaust in order to have the perfect air to fuel mixture for your vehicle’s internal combustion engine. Oxygen sensors will eventually need to be replaced in your vehicle’s lifetime, so it is important to know the symptoms of a bad oxygen sensor so that you can fix the problem before it has adverse effects on your vehicle.

The first symptom is fairly straightforward; your vehicle’s check engine light. When this lights up your dashboard, it could be one of many different problems with your vehicle. In older vehicles however, chances are higher that it could be a faulty oxygen sensor especially if this part has never been replaced. The best way to determine if this part is causing the check engine light to turn on is by using a diagnostic tool. The major problem with waiting until the check engine light turns on is that your vehicle’s O2 sensor could be failing for months before the light comes on. This means that for months your vehicle’s engine performance will be severely hindered, potentially affecting the life of your vehicle. Also, your car or truck will be releasing higher levels of pollution into the atmosphere.

Troubleshooting a failing O2 sensor is difficult, but there are a few obvious symptoms that you may be able to pinpoint. First, you may notice that your engine does not feel as smooth when starting or driving your vehicle. This could result in a rough, choppy idle when starting your vehicle, and perhaps even your engine misfiring. You may also notice your engine misfiring or stumbling when trying to accelerate. You will should also begin to notice that your vehicle’s gas mileage is performing poorly. Especially in older vehicles, a faulty O2 sensor could be the culprit. If this is the case, your vehicle’s air to fuel mixture will either have too much oxygen or not enough, which has negative effects on your vehicle’s fuel consumption, and the overall performance of your engine.

Most manufacturers recommend changing your vehicle’s oxygen sensors at regular intervals between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. It is best not to wait until the check engine light comes on, as it can have negative effects on the life of your vehicle, will result in poor engine performance, and leads to a higher concentration of harmful pollutants in your exhaust. You don’t have to change your oxygen sensor at these intervals, but now that you know the symptoms of a bad oxygen sensor, you will be able to make an informed decision in your automotive repairs.
