f you are into fighting spam (either on in your own mailbox or on larger scale) you will most likely come across the term Bayesian filter. This term although sounds sophisticated and rare is a common element of spam blockers. It is a technique coming from the field of statistics and mathematics named after Thomas Bayes. It has been used for classifying spam mails in spam blockers – programs used for filtering spam. In essence it sorts good and spam e-mails to separate folders. The Bayesian filters are used in spam blockers in the following way. They ‘learn’ from the user which mail is good and which is spam. This means that spam blockers have to be first installed on your mailbox client.
Then the programs ‘observe’ what actions the user takes on incoming mails. Over time a pattern is created based on each user’s case and the program is able to filter spam more efficiently. This way it dynamically adapts to your usage habits and the content of e-mails you specifically receive. Usually in the case of most spam blockers the user can correct the program. It means that if an e-mail is marked as spam is actually a good e-mail, the user can mark it as ‘good’ and it will not be considered as spam anymore. There are also programs that allow an ‘unsure’ folders. E-mails that land there are simply unclassified, since the program did not know whether they should be sorted as spam or good e-mail. The learning process is based on the words and sets of words that the spam e-mails contain. If you keep on marking as spam e-mails containing words ‘enlargement’ then the program will learn that it is spam.
From now on it will mark e-mails containing this word as spam. Since there are some expressions that are common in spam e-mails the combination of words are also taken into consideration. Despite strong mathematical foundations of the Bayesian filter users of spam blockers that employ this technique do not require any specific knowledge to use the program properly. However, if you are interested you might want to review the mathematics behind this technique and procedures used in it. Even though the spam blockers using this technique are sophisticated, unfortunately spammers also can find ways to go around it and penetrate them.
