With 7.2 billion in stimulus funds allotted, that roughly makes up about 24% of the Australian’s massive effort to revamp their Internet system at 100Mbps. Now this next number is interesting because it shows how far we are behind other Countries: If we take an average of internet speeds across the U.S. @ 5Mbps and then subtract congestion and peak usage hours, which leaves us with about 1Mbps per connection. This leaves us with a 1% ratio in speed and at cost per dollar the Australian Government is building an internet system, country wide that is 2400 times more efficient then what the U.S. is planning.
Now I am going to assume that the market value of the Australian Network will also be much cheaper (in the long run) to the consumer.
But keep in mind. If you read this story: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/08/technology/internet/08broadband.html?_r=2&em . There is a lot of concern that wi fi may be a better way to go, and would also cost considerably less.
Let’s look at the kind of speeds we will need to work and play in the global internet design being developed today:
Games are being played at 1080p with incredible graphics. With limited bandwidth, and the most dedicated software management systems out there, there is really no solution for downloading true 1080p on less than 16.5Mbps.
Business and marketing companies use incredible amounts of Bandwidth both directly and indirectly. When companies offering free Products (software programs, gadgets, and system utilities), as marketing tools to sell their ware, they create a frenzy of download happy look-y -loos tying up oodles of bandwidth.
wireless broadband is becoming more the norm. But when we add thousands of individuals using 11 to 54Mbps wireless routers, then they divide that up with multiple users, the whole fiber network slows down to a crawl.
In review, I would say the best thing we can do for this country is give them at least a 50Mbps for 50 bucks a month connection, and throw in some HDTV to boot.
