UNITED KINGDOM, Nov 28 — We have all encountered the stereotypical Grandma or Grandpa at some point in our lives. This elderly citizen spends the bulk of his or her time chatting with friends at the local retirement home. He or she might go golfing on the weekends, or perhaps bake a batch of cookies for the grandchildren when he or she can find enough time amidst a busy schedule of watching old movies and knitting sweaters. Perhaps Grandma plays bingo so consistently because she wants to afford a vacation to Hawaii, or she wishes to purchase some extravagant Christmas presents for her children and grandchildren

e have all encountered the stereotypical grandma or Grandpa at some point in our lives. However, the activity which is most commonly typecast as the ultimate senior citizen game would be a lengthy round of bingo.
You do not typically encounter children, teenagers, or young adults sitting around a table with bingo cards in their hands. It always seems to be the elderly citizens in a community that enjoy this activity the most. However, there is no particular reason for younger people to be barred from playing bingo. Why is it that senior citizens are so often associated with this classic game?
The answer is quite simple. Bingo is a traditional, classic game that is familiar and comfortable for elderly citizens to play. The modern form of bingo has been present in the United States and Canada for over seventy years. Most senior citizens can recall their parents or other members in their community participating in a round of bingo back in its early years, and some can even remember the time of this game’s inception. When bingo was new, people of all ages would gather together to participate in a game. Bingo was an inexpensive way which allowed neighbors to pass the time together, and a weekly bingo game was a popular weekly event in many communities. Bingo was especially popular during the Great Depression, when many people wanted to get their minds off of the tough economic conditions by having a good time with their families and friends. Many senior citizens enjoy playing bingo because it brings back precious childhood memories.
Bingo also allows senior citizens to occupy themselves with a simple, enjoyable game that allows them to socialize with friends of their own age. People of a younger generation might wonder why elderly people do not entertain themselves with video games or various websites. It is not that seniors are incapable of learning how to use modern technology; they simply have no definite purpose for it. Many elderly citizens prefer to entertain themselves as they have been accustomed to their entire lives. Why should Grandma learn how to play the trendiest video game when she enjoys a round of bingo just as much?
Of course, there is one incentive for playing bingo that people of all ages can relate to: Money! Many bingo tournaments are played for cash. Some senior citizens love an exciting round of bingo because it gives them the opportunity to win an enormous sum of money. Perhaps Grandma plays bingo so consistently because she wants to afford a vacation to Hawaii, or she wishes to purchase some extravagant Christmas presents for her children and grandchildren. Senior citizens love the thrill of a gamble just as much as any other members of society.
‘You see I am the other way around. I reckon that way more young people do play bingo with the birth of online gaming it is just the fact that you never see people online, you only see people at bingo halls and churches playing and these are usually old people but that does not mean that the other 80% of people who play online are old too. My Grandma would not know were to start with on a pc. Probably be not able to turn it on, lol.’
