he clifton area is far more than just a network of streets around the University of Cincinnati. It’s an historic neighborhood of charming architecture, cultural opportunities, great restaurants and shopping.
Originally incorporated as a village in 1850, Clifton was annexed by the city of Cincinnati in 1896. In fact, the university originated well before that, with the founding of Cincinnati College in 1819, and was chartered by the state in 1870. It was soon followed by Hebrew Union College in 1875.
The Ludlow Avenue business district, with a broad diversity of shops, restaurants, and clubs, has been designated Cincinnati’s first "Main Street neighborhood" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Quaint side streets, lit at night by the original gas street lamps, form the Gaslight District, offering still more shops, eating places, and at least one dedicated art-film theater. Even the Cincinnati Zoo is nearby.
In fact, Clifton offers a multitude of cultural venues and events. The neighborhood’s creative energy is focused and epitomized by the Clifton Cultural Arts Center, a unique regional arts and learning center on an historic nine-acre campus. The center offers exhibits and performances, as well as classes for both children and adults.
Don’t overlook the outstanding medical facilities in the neighborhood. Several hospitals cluster here, each with a top-flight national reputation, not only for providing state-of-the-art health care, but first-rate medical education, as well.
Clifton is simply an ideal location for students or for anyone who loves the excitement-and advantages-of a university town.
