hat the heck is your dog thinking? We have all probably had that thought pop into our minds at one time or another. As people, we have our agenda and the dog has theirs. When our agendas more or less match, things are wonderful and the pooch is ‘man’s best friend’. However, sometimes a dog is off in his own dog-world, eating the evening’s pot-roast dinner, and that is where dog training can be an asset or a lifeline for the dog owner who is really in over their head.
Because a dog can’t talk, we have to observe every other possible aspect to figure out what exactly a dog is thinking, and more importantly, what it may do next. Posture, tail position, ears, the tilt of it head and the direction his eyes are pointing are all clues to a dog’s state of mind. Even something as subtle as the whiskers on his face or the way he is laying on the floor can provide clues as to what is really happening in Fido’s brain. The key, as they used to say, is to observe and report back to yourself what you see.
Take the time to sit still and receive the information the dog may be communicating. Believe me, he is doing the same as dogs are keen observers of their human masters behavior on many levels. The more you and your dog interact, the better you will become at knowing what he’s thinking. Typically, dog owners seek out dog training because a specific behavior, or set of behaviors, is creating havoc in the household.
Otherwise, new dog owners are trying to dog train a new puppy or are trying to housebreak a puppy in order to start off the relationship on the right foot. While dog training is essential and can be a vital tool for puppies and adult dogs alike, consistent owner observation, focus and attention is the key to dog training success.
Many people will attend a dog training class once or twice a week, but will not put the dog training techniques into practice once they get home. Practicing the training techniques is key, and must be done day in and out until they become routine for the dog. This is easier when training puppies, harder for older dogs.
However, unlike the old adage, old dogs can learn new tricks; it just may take more time and patience on the part of the owner. All the dog training classes in the world will not change behavior without doing the homework of practicing repeatedly the lessons given in class. For those with a new puppy, or seeking better behavior from their current dogs, there are a number of different training courses available online as well as your local neighborhood pet store.
